The town was recently crowned South Africa's top tourism destination for 2024/2025 by Netwerk24, a recognition that is channelling increased investment into the area. This influx supports the creation of both temporary and permanent jobs for local residents and spurs improvements to local infrastructure, including roads and public spaces. While economic benefits are widely appreciated, the community is focused on ensuring sustainable and inclusive growth.
New Opportunities and Jobs for Mossel Bay Residents
Over the last five years, Mossel Bay's tourism sector has expanded considerably, supported by the Western Cape province and the local municipality. This sustained growth has generated thousands of new jobs and increased visitor numbers. This activity directly translates into more work, offering local residents both short-term and long-term career opportunities.
Councillor Thandiwe Nxumalo, responsible for local economic development, emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts. "Our tourism plan prioritises sustainable growth and showcases the authentic Mossel Bay experience," she stated. "We have collaborated closely with businesses to ensure they are prepared, not only with sufficient capacity but also by maintaining the high-quality service visitors expect." This strategic approach aims to attract new visitors and encourage repeat visits, fostering a loyal base for the town.
The anticipated increase in tourists is expected to positively impact local suppliers, craft markets, and various other service providers within the community. This diversification supports broader economic growth beyond just hotels and tours, enhancing stability for everyone. The municipality actively supports tourism projects and integrates local economic development plans to boost economic activity and job creation.
Massive Infrastructure Upgrades Across Mossel Bay
Improving local infrastructure, including road maintenance and public amenities, is a key priority. This ensures a positive experience for visitors and, crucially, enhances the quality of life for residents. A significant project underway is the R540 million upgrade of Louis Fourie Road, representing the largest provincial investment in road infrastructure for the entire Garden Route District. This major undertaking, which commenced in July 2022, is scheduled for completion by the end of August 2026. It aims to improve traffic flow and connectivity within the town. The upgrade involves regular maintenance on approximately six kilometres of the existing road and the transformation of just over three kilometres from a single to a dual carriageway.
Mossel Bay Harbour Gets a Major Facelift
The Port of Mossel Bay has also received substantial investment to enhance its tourism capabilities. On November 13, 2025, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) officially opened a new R22-million Cruise Reception Facility. This facility is designed to further establish Mossel Bay as a premier cruise destination. The expedition cruise ship SH Diana was the first vessel to utilise the new terminal on November 13, 2025, disembarking 167 passengers and 127 crew members. During the previous cruise season, Mossel Bay welcomed 21 cruise ships, bringing over 13,000 passengers who contributed to the local economy through spending at attractions, restaurants, and accommodation establishments. For the 2025/26 season, 23 cruise calls are already planned, and Mossel Bay Tourism anticipates further increases in arrivals and visitor spending. Additionally, the Port of Mossel Bay is slated for a R1 billion upgrade over the next six to seven years to expand its trade and tourism functions, with a comprehensive growth strategy expected by 2030.
Ensuring Sustainable Growth and Community Involvement
The community generally welcomes the economic benefits of tourism, particularly job creation and business opportunities. However, there is a collective awareness of the need to carefully manage potential strain on existing infrastructure. The goal is to ensure tourism development leads to sustainable growth that includes all community members. In Mossel Bay, the Marine Guide Programme has provided local youth with accredited skills in maritime and eco-tourism, facilitating their involvement in this expanding sector. Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town is undertaking planned electricity maintenance to improve reliability, contributing to a more stable future for the region.
Mossel Bay is a significant draw for adventure enthusiasts, offering activities such as deep-sea fishing, SCUBA diving, white shark cage diving, whale watching, skydiving, and the longest over-the-ocean zipline.
