Construction is projected to conclude by June 2026. The project will include a substantial 4,512 kWh Battery Energy Storage System and will provide clean, reliable electricity to the Great Brak River Wastewater Treatment Works, Little Brak River Water Treatment Works, and Sandhoogte Water Treatment Works. Any surplus energy will be fed back into the surrounding electrical network.
Prior to this, on November 5, 2025, the Mossel Bay Municipality, in collaboration with Element Consulting Engineers and Solareff, officially launched the Hartenbos Waste Water Treatment Works Solar PV Plant and Microgrid. This project, which has received an award, features a hybrid system designed to ensure the continuous operation of the Hartenbos wastewater treatment facility, even during Stage 6 load-shedding. The Hartenbos project also incorporates a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a 4,586 kWh capacity and diesel generators for backup. Excess solar energy from the Hartenbos plant is fed into the municipal grid, reducing long-term energy costs and enhancing sustainability. The Hartenbos Solar PV Plant and Microgrid project was recognised as 'Top Performing Project' at the AMEU Awards 2025.
Further plans include a proposed 30 MW Solar Farm at Mossdustria, where environmental impact studies for the 22-hectare site have been completed. The municipality also intends to procure 30 MW of electricity from independent power producers (IPPs). These efforts are part of Mossel Bay's broader strategy to foster local economic growth in a low-carbon, resource-efficient, and equitable manner, supporting sustainable living and production. Meanwhile, Cape Town dam levels were reported at 78.5% as of July 28, 2026, indicating the ongoing importance of water conservation across the Western Cape.
Gearing Up for Tomorrow: Infrastructure and Our Future
